Support

Spousal Support (also known as maintenance or alimony) is money provided by one spouse to another. There are many legal reasons why a spouse should pay or receive spousal support, however, the arguments we can make for you depend on the facts of your case. Spousal support is designed to compensate a spouse for any economic disadvantages resulting from the marriage and its breakdown, as well as help them achieve economic independence. The Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines have been developed to make spousal support more predictable and consistent, all in an effort to assist spouses in coming to a resolution.

Child Support is the right of the child, and parents have a duty and obligation under the law to financially provide for their children. The Federal Child Support Guidelines and Tables determine the amount of support you are to pay based on your income. Depending on the custody and access arrangements in place, the amount of child support a parent is obligated to pay may be adjusted.   Another component of child support, on top of the table amount, are expenses set out in s.7 of the Guidelines: these include expenses relating to health, schooling, and extra curricular activities, and a parent’s contribution to these s.7 expenses is usually paid proportionately.
